Gabriel Lester turns the Upper West Side into a scent promenade: a walk along Broadway from W 80th to W 88th Street led by a vividly perfumed trolley draped in a Latin American blanket and stocked with unmarked bottles. Channeling the city’s first impression, Lester performs a freestyle, market-vendor patter, calling out “free scents, smells, and odors!” and inviting brief, playful exchanges about what each fragrance evokes. Part street poem, part olfactory kiosk, the piece treats smell as memory and map, letting the improvisatory rhythm of New York shape the pitch, the pace, and the stories that rise from the city’s invisible clouds.
